We take the time to answer the little questions that sometimes slip through the cracks of day to day coverage of Macs & Music. Questions from our readers are one of the best ways for us to know what direction to go with our coverage. Remember, the only stupid question is the one left unasked.

1394 & Yamaha Nothing New
To add some insight to the future of FireWire, M.G. writes MacRocks.com with some inside scoop on Yamaha's MLan:

"Reguarding Yamaha's firewire support-as a in over my head repair kinda guy, I can tell you that the first pice to support mLan (was) the O2R. It's been built in for years just waiting on a card to slip in. The 03D too. I'm not sure about an 01V as I haven't had to fix one yet ;-). The orginal ProMix 01 does not. The EX5,EX7, and EX5R Synths all have the ability too, via a slip in card. It was orginally slated for Summer Namm '99 release, but it didn't happen. Just thought you'd like to know."

Thanks for the heads' up, M.G. This explains the hedging and eye shifting by Yamaha reps at Summer NAMM regarding any big MLan announcement. At the same time, it tells us what to look at when considering certain Yamaha gear to intigrate with your new FireWire Mac or iMac.

Something completely different . . .
MacRocks.com has recieved a couple of emails from someone claiming to have purchased a flavored iMac a hardware/software combo to be used together.

*sigh*

We really wish you had read anything we've written about the iMac over the last year. At the very least had checked the specs of iMac vs. the audio product. You would have clearly noticed that any new audio card requires a PCI slot and iMac clearly has no PCI slot.

This reader also wants to know how to get the Emagic card to work with his iMac -- suggesting they had "read somewhere" there's a USB-to-PCI adapter to accomplish this.

*sigh*

We have scoured the web (in vain) looking for anything remotely simular to such a device. The fact we found nothing is less important to the fact that the USB bus is just NOT fast or wide enough to support the transfer of a PCI bus. Not to mention the driver and extensions to be invented (impossibly) to make it all work.

Even if all these issues against were some how magicly made reality, the cost of the whole lot of it would put you ahead of the cost of a B&W G3 Mac, which should start falling to iMac prices soon enough.

Again, sorry you leapt so soon. Our suggestion is to sell your iMac and shop around for a G3 with PCI slots -- or, sell your audio card/software and your iMac, then go get the new DV line of iMacs with FireWire.

Although there's little available for strictly audio perihprials now, there will be an increasingly wide transition amongst both professional and consumer (home entertainment) products to the IEEE 1394 protocol, AKA FireWire.
