I've been using the UA-30 on my imac DV-SE/500 mhz since October 2000. It is certainly a pain that Pro Tools FREE doesn't support USB audio, but as the previous post states, there are workarounds. I've never had any clicking/popping sounds, and the UA-30 has worked wonderfully.

The only real caveat I'd mention is that the UA-30 recognizes incoming SCMS signals (digital copies of digital sources) and will NOT allow the signal to pass through. If you are working with DAT or MD (as I do), it will be necessary to have an SCMS stripper.
