Yes, I think your friend is right about the PowerBook. iBook is great for what it is, but for a main studio machine, the PowerBook will offer greater satsfaction beyond bus speed. More ports and expandibility are also to your advantage with the PB. You can also add PCI slots through CardBus to use high end audio cards as well as external monitors. I have a 300mhz iBook that works well for less demanding musical undertakings such as 2 track tweaking and general mp3 use. Good luck and let us know how it works out for you.
